Keynote speaker Siri Genik emphasizes that clear and respectful communication in contexts of high uncertainty is critical to building social legitimacy from the outset of projects.

Building trust from the earliest stages of mineral exploration will be one of the central themes of proEXPLO 2026, where sustainability expert Siri C. Genik will deliver a keynote lecture focused on the importance of communication and social legitimacy in project development.

In this context, Genik stressed that trust is not a secondary element, but the foundation upon which successful exploration is built.

“Trust shapes, from a very early stage, the quality of the relationship between the company and the territory. It is no longer enough to have a strong geological opportunity; it is also necessary to build legitimacy, listen carefully, and establish a credible relationship from the outset,” the lawyer told the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP).

Communication and Legitimacy

The expert explained that one of the main challenges for companies is entering territories where complex social dynamics already exist, along with concrete expectations and concerns from local communities. This scenario is compounded by the inherent uncertainty of early exploration stages, which requires particularly careful communication.

“In early exploration, there is a great deal of uncertainty, and if communication is not clear and simple, mistrust can arise very quickly. That is why this stage requires not only clarity, but also respect and sensitivity to the local context,” she stated to IIMP.

She emphasized that trust is built progressively, through consistent actions, transparency, and active listening. She also highlighted that effective communication management from the outset not only strengthens relationships with communities, but also helps reduce risks and improve the long-term viability of projects.

Genik’s participation in proEXPLO 2026 will highlight the need to integrate communication, sustainability, and social management as strategic pillars of modern mineral exploration, in a context where legitimacy is becoming increasingly decisive for the development of the sector.
