South32 has partnered with GE to take its business digital

GE is to assist in developing South32’s technology roadmap and its digital transformation as part of a new three-year strategic partnership.

GE expects that this partnership will enable it to strengthen its role in the global mining sector.

The partnership is also expected to provide South32 an opportunity to improve its productivity across its diverse mining portfolio comprising ten operations in five countries.

South32 chief executive officer Graham Ker said: “Bringing the world of operational technology and information technology together to monitor equipment and systems remotely and predict future behaviour is a game-changer.

“It has the potential to identify and solve a problem before it affects operations.”

“With data and analytics, we can achieve greater levels of productivity, operational efficiencies, and improve safety.”

Under this partnership, South32 will use GE’s Predix platform, which has been designed for the industry that connects industrial equipment, data analysis and instant insights.

Usage of this technology will enable South32 to streamline its decisions and optimise operations rather than as individualised assets and equipment.

GE chairman and chief executive officer Jeff Immelt said: “The future of mining is digital. With data and analytics, we can achieve greater levels of productivity, operational efficiencies, and improve safety.

“We look forward to working with South32 to help them optimise their operations and accelerate the digital transformation of the mining industry at large.”
