The governments of Morocco and Sudan have pledged to step up cooperation in the mining sector. Aziz Rabbah, Morocco’s Minister of Energy, Mines, and Environment, met in Rabat with his Sudanese counterpart, Mohamed Bashir Abdullah to exchange and discuss ways to explore opportunities for bilateral cooperation of common interest in the mining sector between the economic actors of the two countries.

During the meeting, the two representatives praised the “excellent relations” between the two countries, especially in the mining sector. They expressed their willingness to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the mining sector through intensifying future meetings and consultations between the head of two ministries.

Such meetings will contribute to the development of a roadmap in the mining field, creating various opportunities of exchange of experience and expertise as well as the development of economic partnerships.

Five-day visit

The Sudanese Minister’s five-day visit to Morocco – September 21 to 25 – includes several meetings with actors of the mining sector in Morocco, such as OCP Group, the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines, the “MANAGEM” Group, and the Rabat-based Higher National School of Mines (ENSMR).

Another sign of the good bilateral relations between Rabat and Khartoum is that Sudan has been one of the strongest supporters of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara. In a recent meeting with his Sudanese counterpart, Morocco’s foreign minister welcomed new bilateral agreements aimed at further boosting the existing relations between the two African countries.

He spoke of giving a “new life” to the trade relations between the two nations, as well as their cooperation on economic development projects.
