Kal Tire, Decoda launch real-time hazard detection system to bring autonomous haul road hazard detection to mines

Kal Tire’s Mining Tire Group has partnered with Australian mining technology firm Decoda to launch a new autonomous haul road hazard detection solution designed to improve productivity, tire life and fleet efficiency at mining operations worldwide.

The collaboration has resulted in KalPRO HaulSight, a real-time hazard detection system that builds on Kal Tire’s existing KalPRO autonomous tire inspection technology.

The announcement, made in January 2026, underscores a growing focus on digital and autonomous technologies in mining, where real-time insights from data and sensors can reduce costly downtime and prevent equipment damage.

KalPRO HaulSight is the latest addition to the company’s KalPRO suite — a family of innovative mining tools and digital solutions under the KalPRO branding.

KalPRO HaulSight uses a combination of high-resolution LiDAR (light detection and ranging) and camera sensors mounted on the front and rear of haul trucks, along with edge computing to process live footage and deliver instant alerts.

The system identifies hazards such as spillage, road undulations, and high G-force events — all of which can cause significant damage to tires, truck frames and suspension systems if left unchecked.

According to Kal Tire, the ability to detect hazards as they occur allows mine sites to prevent the tire damage that autonomous tire inspections like KalPRO TireSight only identify after the fact.

The HaulSight data also integrates with Kal Tire’s Tire & Operations Managing System (TOMS), enabling condition monitoring teams to assess flagged issues and generate priority-based work orders automatically.

HaulSight’s ability to detect road hazards as they arise means mines can prevent the tire damage that TireSight detects,” said Christian Erdelyi, Technology Services Director at Kal Tire’s Mining Tire Group.

We’re excited about how this collaboration with Decoda will further our achievements in the autonomous space to bring customers even greater improvements to tire life, productivity and fuel efficiency.

The technology aims to provide fleet teams and road crews with unprecedented visibility across the entire haul circuit, enabling them to react quickly to emerging issues and create optimal road conditions that maximise cycle speed and fuel efficiency.

It also offers longer-term planning insights, calculating how road conditions impact tire life, productivity and fuel use — giving ore planning teams actionable data to support investment decisions in road maintenance or upgrades.

HaulSight gives mine sites unprecedented visibility across the entire haul circuit and turns that insight into action. By making critical data easy to visualize and act on, operations see measurable improvements, like faster circuits and reduced downtime, from day one,” said George Spink, Executive General Manager at Decoda. “Leveraging Kal Tire’s longstanding relationships means we have the chance to bring these benefits to more mines, so we’re pleased to be a part of such a valuable partnership.

Kal Tire and Decoda have been testing the HaulSight system at Canadian mine sites for approximately 18 months, including in sub-zero conditions, with strong results. Because no two haul roads are identical, the system’s real-time feedback can even guide haul truck operators into loading or dumping zones to avoid impacts with potholes or other hazards, enhancing safety and reducing unexpected maintenance challenges.

As more mining companies adopt autonomous and electric vehicles, solutions like HaulSight are expected to play an increasingly important role in fleet optimisation, helping operators reduce risk, improve uptime and lower operational costs across haulage circuits.
