Ivanhoe Mines has announced a significant increase in hydroelectric power availability for its Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
This development is set to support enhanced copper production and the upcoming commissioning of the site’s direct-to-blister smelter.
Record Copper Production Achieved
In the first quarter of 2025, Kamoa-Kakula produced approximately 133,120 tonnes of copper, nearing record levels.
The surge in production is attributed to improved operational performance since mid-March. The company anticipates further increases in quarterly production as additional power becomes available.
Securing Additional Hydroelectric Power
Ivanhoe Mines has secured an additional 20 megawatts (MW) of imported hydroelectric power, with expectations of obtaining a further 30 MW imminently.
Furthermore, the company projects that up to 50 MW will be generated from the upgraded Turbine #5 at the Inga II hydropower complex starting in the fourth quarter of 2025.
This turbine upgrade is part of a public-private partnership with the DRC’s state-owned power company, La Société Nationale d’Electricité (SNEL).
Robert Friedland, Executive Co-Chair of Ivanhoe Mines, emphasized the importance of these developments:
“The strategic enhancement of our power infrastructure underscores our commitment to sustainable and efficient operations at Kamoa-Kakula. Reliable hydroelectric power is essential for our ongoing expansion and the well-being of the surrounding communities.”
Implications for Smelter Commissioning
With the bolstered power supply, Ivanhoe Mines plans to commence the start-up of Kamoa-Kakula’s direct-to-blister smelter next month.
The smelter is expected to produce 99.7% pure copper anodes starting in July 2025. This advancement is poised to enhance the value chain of the copper complex and contribute to the local economy.
Commitment to Sustainable Development
The collaboration between Ivanhoe Mines and SNEL reflects a shared dedication to sustainable development in the DRC.
The increased hydroelectric capacity not only supports mining operations but also provides surplus power to the national grid, benefiting local communities.
Marna Cloete, President & Chief Executive Officer of Ivanhoe Mines, stated:
“Our partnership with SNEL is a testament to our commitment to responsible mining and community development. By investing in renewable energy infrastructure, we are contributing to the DRC’s energy security and economic growth.”
Future Outlook
Ivanhoe Mines is set to release its first-quarter 2025 financial results after market close on April 30, 2025, followed by a conference call for investors on May 1, 2025.
The company remains optimistic about its growth trajectory, driven by strategic investments in infrastructure and a focus on sustainable practices.
As Kamoa-Kakula continues to expand its production capacity, the integration of renewable energy sources positions the complex as a leading example of environmentally conscious mining in Africa.
