Digital innovation – including artificial intelligence – holds the key to a new frontier in copper mining, First Quantum Minerals Limited (FQM) told delegates at the 2025 ICT Association of Zambia (ICTAZ) Conference and 16th Annual General Meeting.

The company was one of the sponsors of the event, themed “From Copper to Code: Leveraging Artificial Intelligence to Accelerate Digital Transformation in Zambia for Economic Growth,” which brought together industry leaders, experts, and innovators to explore the transformative power of technology in driving economic growth.

“This timeless call to unity is especially relevant as we transition from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-driven and innovation-led economy. Today we convene under a theme that is both symbolic and transformative. This is not just a theme, it is a national call to action,” said Ministry of Science and Technology Permanent Secretary Dr Brilliant Habeenzu.

“It signals a paradigm shift in how we define value, generate growth and empower or people. For decades, copper mining has been the economic lifeline of Zambia, driving exports, creating jobs and stabilising our fiscal frame work, but as the world economy evolves so we must unlock the new frontiers, powered by what lies beneath the ground and by what we code with our hands and imagine with our minds,” added Dr Habeenzu.

FQM’s partnership with ICTAZ underscores its commitment to harnessing the potential of information and communication technology (ICT) and artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionise its operations and contribute to Zambia’s economic development. By leveraging advanced data management systems, AI-driven predictive maintenance, and automation technologies, FQM aims to enhance productivity, safety, and sustainability in the mining sector.

“We are delighted to partner with ICTAZ as we continue to drive digital transformation and innovation in our operations,” said First Quantum Minerals ICT Service Delivery Lead Mutembo Mpengula.

“Our adoption of ICT and AI not only enhances our production capabilities but also contributes significantly to Zambia’s economy, creating jobs, promoting skill development, and fostering economic growth,” he added.

The partnership reflects FQM’s dedication to sustainable mining practices, environmental stewardship, and community development. By investing in local talent, supporting small businesses, and implementing environmentally friendly practices, FQM is committed to making a positive impact in the regions where it operates.

The 2025 ICTAZ Conference and AGM provides a platform for industry stakeholders to share knowledge, expertise, and best practices in leveraging technology to drive economic growth and development. FQM looks forward to engaging with ICTAZ and other stakeholders to explore opportunities for collaboration and innovation.
