Digital innovation – including artificial intelligence – holds the key to a new frontier in copper mining, First Quantum Minerals Limited (FQM) told delegates at the 2025 ICT Association of Zambia (ICTAZ) Conference and 16th Annual General Meeting.
The company was one of the sponsors of the event, themed “From Copper to Code: Leveraging Artificial Intelligence to Accelerate Digital Transformation in Zambia for Economic Growth,” which brought together industry leaders, experts, and innovators to explore the transformative power of technology in driving economic growth.

This is not just a theme, it is a national call to action,” said Ministry of Science and Technology Permanent Secretary Dr Brilliant Habeenzu.

For decades, copper mining has been the economic lifeline of Zambia, driving exports, creating jobs and stabilising our fiscal frame work, but as the world economy evolves so we must unlock the new frontiers, powered by what lies beneath the ground and by what we code with our hands and imagine with our minds,” added Dr Habeenzu.
