The Ministry of Minerals today launched an ambitious foray to position the country as
Africa’s leading mining destination of choice. This initiative has been initiated by Her
Excellency President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan recognizing Tanzania as one Africa’s
most resource rich mineral asset nation, endowed with mineral resources ranging from
critical minerals, rare earth, precious metals, energy and industrial minerals.

The Minster of Minerals, Honorable Anthony Mavunde outlined Tanzania’s transformation
vision at this year’s 2024 Mining Indaba in Cape Town South Africa, presenting the
Government’s ambitious strategy for the mining sector to drive investment, economic
growth, value addition and focus on sustainable and responsible mining practices.
Minister Mavunde declared, ‘’Our vision isn’t simply to dig up minerals, it’s to ignite the
engines of prosperity’’.

For Tanzania, the African narrative of mining – shrouded in environmental degradation,
exploitation, and secrecy – is crumbling. Tanzania is redefining the script, not with empty
promises, but with ground-breaking action, offering transformative partnerships. Strategic
and sustainable partnerships will define Tanzania’s future mining road map.

In his keynote remarks at the Indaba Forum, the Permanent Secretary, Kheri Mahimbali
confirmed Tanzania’s commitment to responsible mining was yielding tangible results.

According to Mahimbali, in 2023, ‘’the mining sector contributed to around 10% of our
GDP, generating nearly 60% of the country’s foreign exchange, with responsible practices
attracting over USD 2 billion in new investments, led by global mining companies’’.
Planned additional commitments will exceed over USD 1 bln in the next 2-3 years,
covering critical and rare earth minerals such as graphite, lithium, nickel, neodymium etc.
as Tanzania embarks on beneficiation of its mineral deposits.

Tanzania is one of Africa most mining investment centric countries, catalyzed by an
investor-friendly environment, offering attractive fiscal, regulatory and legal frameworks
which rank among the most competitive and enabling of any mining destination. The
country is also one of the most peaceful on the continent, anchored by strong political
stability, underpinned by established democratic processes and institutions.

The country is now embarking on developing a critical mineral policy, a first in Sub
Saharan Africa, ensuring supply reliability and resiliency, promoting exploration,
production and innovation and encouraging sustainable and responsible practices
