AECI, one of South Africa’s most enduring industrial giants, has marked its centenary with the release of a landmark coffee table book that chronicles its remarkable journey from an explosives supplier in 1924 to a diversified global leader in mining services and chemicals.

The richly illustrated publication, launched this month, is more than just a corporate retrospective. It is a deeply human narrative of innovation, resilience, and transformation, capturing the evolution of AECI across a century of industrial change. Blending editorial depth with emotive storytelling, the book pays tribute to AECI’s enduring legacy while offering a bold vision for a sustainable and inclusive future.

Structured thematically, the centenary book traces AECI’s major eras—from its roots in the explosives industry, through diversification and global expansion, to its present-day focus on sustainability and social impact. The publication draws on rare archival images, first-hand accounts from employees, and insights into the company’s influence on industrial South Africa, offering readers a compelling cultural artefact of the country’s industrial heritage.

“This publication is a reflection on what it means to lead, to evolve responsibly, to confront uncomfortable histories, and to build institutions that endure because they serve people, not just shareholders,” said Dr Khotso Mokhele, AECI’s outgoing Chairman of the Board.

Mokhele’s remarks come at a pivotal moment for AECI, as the company not only celebrates its centenary but also ushers in new leadership at the board level. After a distinguished tenure, Mokhele is stepping down as Chairman, with seasoned business leader Philisiwe Sibiya set to take the helm.

Sibiya’s appointment signals a significant transition for AECI as it charts its course for the next 100 years. Widely recognised as one of Africa’s most influential businesswomen, Sibiya brings a formidable track record in business transformation, financial stewardship, and strategic leadership across complex, high-stakes markets.

“AECI has never stood still,” Sibiya said. “It has always found opportunity in complexity and forged ahead with purpose. As we enter our next century, we do so with a renewed commitment to sustainable growth, to creating value for all stakeholders, and to being a truly future-facing African company with an accelerated globalisation strategy.”

Sibiya’s leadership comes at a time when AECI is intensifying its focus on sustainable innovation, global competitiveness, and inclusive growth. The centenary book serves as both a tribute to AECI’s past and a strategic marker of its ambitions for the future—a future defined by financial soundness, social responsibility, and operational agility.

Over the past 100 years, AECI has navigated complex challenges, from economic shifts and global market disruptions to the imperatives of environmental stewardship and social accountability. Its story is one of continuous reinvention, anchored in a legacy of science, purpose, and resilience.

As the company steps into its next century, AECI’s leadership remains committed to building on this legacy. The centenary book, by capturing the stories of those who have shaped AECI’s journey, offers a reminder that industrial success is not just about profits and products, but about people, innovation, and the courage to adapt.

Looking ahead, AECI under Sibiya’s stewardship is set to deepen its investment in sustainable solutions and global markets, while staying true to its South African roots. As Sibiya put it, “AECI’s story is not just about the past; it’s about what we choose to do next.”

With a century behind it and a new chapter beginning, AECI stands poised to continue shaping industries, empowering communities, and driving innovation for generations to come.
