A new documentary, World’s Deepest Marathon, will premiere at African Mining Indaba on 10 February 2026. The film follows 55 runners who completed the marathon 1,119 metres below sea level in Sweden’s Boliden Garpenberg mine. Featuring interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, the documentary highlights the runners’ prep, motivation, and the tech innovation that made the event possible.
Post-screening, ICMM President Rohitesh Dhawan will host a panel with fellow runners, sharing insights into the challenges of running deep underground.
ICMM’s Rohitesh Dhawan said the experience was “one of the most challenging yet rewarding things I’ve ever done.”
World Gold Council’s Terry Heymann praised the documentary for showcasing modern mining’s innovation and safety standards.
BecomingX’s Paul Gurney highlighted the film’s focus on human stories and unity.
The marathon was co-organised by BecomingX, ICMM, and Boliden, with World Gold Council sponsorship.
