The MINE Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ) has made known its concerns about Konkola Copper Mine (KCM)’s movw to retire all its workers who have reached 55 years of age. The union has since stated that it is making consultations on how to handle the situation following KCM’s decision.
According to local media reports, KCM’s decision runs contrary to government’s three tire retirement requirements at 55, 60 and 65 years, respectively. Moreover, MUZ President Joseph Chewe says the union was aware of KCM’s plans and would issue a comprehensive statement after making consultations with lawyers and other relevant stakeholders.
Mr. Chewe further urged the workers to remain calm as the union pursues the matter. Earlier on this week, the Nchanga Member of Parliament Chilombo Chali issued a statement saying that the Console Copper Mine had found another way of getting rid of workers. According to the statement, CCM was retiring those that are 55 years and above. This is after u-turning on its earlier plan to retrench workers due to the new tax regime.
It thus comes as no surprise that fear has since gripped hundreds of workers at the embattled mining giant’s offices in Chingola, Kitwe, Chililabombwe and Nampundwe following the circulation of information that all workers above the age of 55 would be retired.
On the other hand, KCM Corporate Affairs Manager Eugene Chungu proved unreachable for comments as his phone went unanswered.
