Glencore Ferroalloys handed over spectacles to 123 learners from Kroondal Primary School ranging from grade R to grade 7 in the North-West Province, in partnership with the Ukubona Foundation as part of their eye screening and testing initiative. The initiative, during which 1050 pupils received free eye tests, is aimed at improving the vision health of school children in the communities near its operations.
This initiative highlights Glencore’s commitment to the well-being of future generations, ensuring that children have the clear vision necessary to succeed in their education and beyond and it forms part of Glencore’s community health program
The Ukubona foundation was established in 2017 to be an agent that brings about improved quality of education and social life to learners. Vision health is a crucial factor in a child’s ability to learn and thrive. Many children suffer from undiagnosed vision problems that can hinder their academic performance and overall development. Recognising this, Glencore has partnered with local schools and healthcare providers to offer comprehensive eye screenings and testing for school children. The initiative is designed to detect common vision issues such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.
“The importance of wearing spectacles improves vision, enhances focus, improves academic performance, and makes learning more comfortable for learners with vision problems. We are excited to partner with Glencore to donate these prescribed glasses to help maintain a better focus on learning materials, leading to better comprehension and retention of information. I am so excited to see the smiles on their faces when they get to see the world in the same way as their peers,” said Kelebogile Modutwane, Co-founder of Ukubona Foundation.
Spectacles can reduce eye strain, headaches, and fatigue, making studying and participating in educational activities more enjoyable. Addressing vision problems early can contribute to long-term eye health, while glasses can enhance safety in activities like science lab experiments or physical education classes.
Elias Sello Moroane, Principal of Kroondal Primary School, emphasised how this initiative will impact learners and community members: “On behalf of Kroondal Primary School, I would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Glencore and Ukubona Foundation for their generous donation of 123 spectacles. Many of our students suffer from various eye conditions ranging from normal to severe, and unfortunately, a significant number of them lack the support of parents who can afford the necessary corrective lenses. This donation is a beacon of hope for these children, many of whom struggle to concentrate in class due to poor eyesight and consequently fall behind in their studies. Thank you for making a profound difference in their lives.”
Speaking on the initiative, Dr. Louis Snyman, Acting Chief Community and Social Responsibility Officer at Glencore Ferroalloys, said: “We believe that every child deserves the chance to succeed, and clear vision is a crucial part of that success. Through this initiative, we are proud to support the health and education of children in the communities where we operate, ensuring they have the best possible start in life. Our commitment extends beyond today, as prescription spectacles need to be renewed regularly. Glencore is dedicated to ensuring that this need is met, so that learners can enjoy their new vision consistently and continue to thrive.”
Glencore believes every child deserves the chance to see the world through clear eyes and through this initiative, its aims to empower these young minds to explore, learn, and grow without limitations.
