The briquetting process has been developed in the late nineteenth century to agglomerate coal fines and form briquettes originally used for home heating and cooking. The heart of the process is the roller press which is currently used in a very wide variety of applications in the mineral industry in order to densify or enlarge the fines which could not be used in further processing, generally in furnaces where pyrometallurgy is used to purify the minerals or the metals.

Among the most developed applications of the briquetting process in the field of mineral processing, our group K.R KOMAREK /EURAGGLO has a lot of experiences in the following areas:

  • Briquetting of nickel metal dusts or nickel oxides before furnaces
  • Briquetting of manganese ore, chrome ore, copper concentrates before furnaces
  • Briquetting of molybdenum trioxide
  • Briquetting of fluorspar
  • Briquetting of ferro-alloy fines
  • Briquetting of clays and refractory clays before calcination
  • Briquetting of lime and dolomitic lime before calcination
  • Briquetting and granulation of sodium chloride for water softening
  • Granulation of limestone for the production of granules used as soil conditioners or feed premix
  • Granulation of potassium chloride, partially acidified rock phosphate
  • Granulation of bentonite and other colloidal clays used as absorbents or cat litters

KR KOMAREK/EURAGGLO are constantly testing the briquetting and granulation ability of mineral fines in their pilot plants in the USA, France and South Africa to check the feasibility of the process and  assess the quality of the agglomerated materials and its suitability to the further processing steps.

Size of agglomeration plants start from a few kilos per hour (lab unit) to 80-100 MTPH or more depending on the raw material processed.

Final agglomerated materials can be:

  • Granules of various sizes: from micro-granules 0.5-2 mm to large granules 2-5 mm or more.
  • Briquettes with volume varying from about 4cm3 up to 400 cm3 or more to enable the use with specific furnaces.

Agglomeration process allows to use small mineral particles or recycle them, thus participating the renewal of raw materials in the world economy.
