Australian miner Frontier Diamonds says it is within reach of achieving its set production level of 10 000 tonnes per month by June after surprising itself with a record output of 7 200 tonnes of diamond ore at the Sedibeng Diamond Mine in South Africa last month.

In a statement, company chief executive officer Jan Louw said in March, drilling operations at Sedibeng produced 1 513 carats, including the recovery of 5 exceptional stones totalling 72 carats.

“We are now well advanced towards achieving our targeted throughput level of 10,000 tonnes per month following the introduction of the Sub Level Retreat Mining method at Sedibeng.

“We are also very pleased with the improved grades being achieved and the recovery of several exceptional and highly impressive stones from newly developed areas of the mine,” Louw said.

Early in March, Frontier recovered the first gemstones from the Bellsbank Pipe, a satellite of its main Sedibeng Mine. According to the company, the new discoveries offer a “strong possibility” of further discoveries.
