Spy Group Holdings purchases McCloksey J45 jaw crusher from HPE Africa
Spy Group Holdings – specialists in crushing and screening in the coal mining sector – has invested in a new McCloskey J45 jaw crusher from HPE Africa.
“Our ongoing investment in advanced machinery, forms part of our team’s commitment to customers, to continually find more efficient ways to process coal,” says Martin Brown, Spy Group Holdings. “This new heavy-duty McCloskey J45 jaw crusher enhances our existing McCloskey C50 and J40 crushers, which have exceeded performance expectations.
“One of the outstanding features in the design of McCloskey crushers, is minimal electronics, which means fewer problems resulting from dust damage in tough coal processing conditions. McCloskey crushers have a user-friendly dust-and water-proof control panel, that allows efficient monitoring of pressures, fluid levels and fuel consumption. This minimal, yet effective electronics system, also provides push-button control of the jaw, track and feeder functions.
“The new robust McCloskey J45 jaw crusher is in operation at the Wonderfontein coal crushing and screening project, of 100 000 tons per month. Our machines are also being used at another Glencore Izimbiwa coal crushing project with Zonneblom, of 120 000 tons per month.
“Our preference for mobile equipment is in line with the current trend in the mining sector, where mines choose to operate mobile equipment, which is owned and operated by contractors. This system reduces capital investment costs for mining companies and eases their responsibility for daily running operations. It is a win-win situation – the contractor gets paid per ton and the mine gets the coal quantities required for sales.
“In the selection of equipment, we believe it’s important to consider factors like performance specifications and suitability of the machine for harsh environments. It’s also critical that downtime of equipment is minimal and maintenance requirements are low. McCloskey crushers, with high performance and reduced electronics, have a significant advantage here.”
The new J45 McCloskey jaw crusher is optimised for use at the primary stage of crushing in the Wonderfontein project. A double roll crusher is used at the second stage of processing, to crush coal down to –40 mm, to meet Eskom specifications.
This high-performance crusher, with a 45” x 27” jaw, also has a heavy-duty bofar grizzly design and pan feeder chutes, with steeper angles, designed to reduce material sticking to the chutes. A high-capacity hopper with 6 m³ capacity, is mounted over a vibrating feeder. The main conveyor is fitted with heavy-duty skirting, positioned close to ground level, for ease of access and maintenance. This machine has both level and load sensors as standard, ensuring suitability for all applications.
According to Rasheel Sukdhoe, the McCloskey product manager at HPE Africa : one of the major contributors to the decision for Spy Group Holdings to purchase equipment from HPE Africa, is the convenience of a large stock holding of parts, as well as dedicated trained technicians, who support the crusher, to avoid down time of the equipment.
Downtime on a mine is costly. For this reason, HPE Africa and Spy Group Holdings work closely, to ensure high-efficiency of equipment, for optimum productivity.
Sukdhoe, also states that the J45 jaw crusher has out-produced similar size competitor machines, due to a deeper jaw chamber and a more aggressive toggle on all McCloskey jaw crusher models. McCloskey equipment also has considerably more room for maintenance, making servicing of the machine quick and easy for service staff.
The full range of McCloskey equipment includes jaw, cone and impact (horizontal and vertical) crushers; trommel and vibrating screeners, stacking conveyors and washing systems. Apart from mining and quarrying, these machines are used in waste management and recycling, construction and demolition, as well as infrastructure projects, road building and landscaping.
HPE Africa’s range also includes Hyundai construction machines and Soosan hydraulic hammers, to complement the McCloskey range.
The company supports this equipment with a technical advisory, support and maintenance service throughout Southern Africa.
