De Beer’s diamond screening device SYNTHdetect has been nominated for Industry Innovaation of the Year in the 2018 JNA Awards. The device is the brainchild for the International Institute of Diamond Grading & Research a part of De Beers Group.

SYNTHdetect, which was launched last year, is the first synthetic diamond screening device to simultaneously test multiple stones in set jewelry. It also has the industry’s lowest referral rate at around 0.05%. As such, it not only increases efficiency, but also significantly reduces costs for retailers and manufacturers. This is because it ensures they only get authentic synthetic diamonds.

The President, International Institute of Diamond Grading & Research (IIDGR), Jonathan Kendall expressed his delight on behalf of the company on account of the shortlisting of their product. He further backed SYNTHdetec’s pioneering approach to screening for synthetic diamond content. He added that the company’s customers are giving positive feedback with regards to the new technologically advanced device.

The awards shortlisting process involved three rounds. This is inclusive of a visit by the judges to IIDGR’s lab in Surat, India, for a demonstration of SYNTHdetect in action. The winners will be announced at the JNA Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner on 16 September during the Hong Kong Jewellery & Gem Fair.

The JNA Awards advocate for best business practices in the jewelry and gemstone community. This is through the recognition as well as promotion of companies and individuals who demonstrate outstanding leadership, innovative thinking, and sustainable and socially responsible strategies. This is with a focus on their contribution in Asia. Moreover, their ideas should make a positive impact in the trade and communities.
